The United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE) is a three-step exam that assesses a physician's ability to apply knowledge, concepts, and principles in the medical field. The USMLE is sponsored by the Federation of State Medical Boards (FSMB) and the National Board of Medical Examiners (NBME).
Step 1 of the USMLE focuses on basic medical sciences and tests a candidate's knowledge of anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, pharmacology, and microbiology. Step 2 has two components: Clinical Knowledge (CK) and Clinical Skills (CS). Step 2 CK assesses a candidate's ability to apply clinical knowledge in diagnosing and managing patient care, while Step 2 CS evaluates clinical skills such as patient communication and physical examination. Finally, Step 3 assesses a physician's ability to apply medical knowledge and skills to the management of patient care.
The USMLE is required for all medical graduates who wish to practice medicine in the United States. The scores from the USMLE are used by residency program directors as a factor in selecting candidates for their programs. The exam is known for being challenging and rigorous, and many medical students devote a significant amount of time and effort to prepare for it.
